The new GNU General Public License - A Direct Attack on Software Patents and Patent Licensing? (Online - Live)
Friday, August 10, 2007
12:30 - 2:00 PM Eastern

Course Description:
The Free Software Foundation (FSF) recently published the GNU General Public License (GPL) Version 3 (GPLv3), a new version of the most broadly used open source software license. GPLv3 is intended to address uses of free software under the current GPL that are inconsistent with the FSF’s views. The most significant changes reflect the FSF’s objection to software patents and DRM technologies. This version includes major changes intended to prevent future agreements between commercial software vendors and open source vendors such as the November 2006 Microsoft-Novell deal. It also includes restrictions on implementing Digital Rights Management (DRM) in works licensed under the GPLv3 and additional requirements on the use of GPL-licensed works in consumer devices, both changes directed at TiVo. This seminar will discuss the growing impact of open source software, the influence of the FSF, changes in the new GPL from version 2, and some legal risks introduced by those changes.
